In spite of a series of health problems, luckily not supersized on Wednesday's game, Anwil Wloclawek beat Asseco Gdynia 75:68 in the first battle of the I round of Intermarche Basket Cup. The hosts could have won by a bigger amount of points but they were vying with both the opponents and fatigue.
At the end of the third quarter Devidas Dulkys jumped up and, having been consciously fed with a pass by Keith Clanton, made a triple and Anwil took the highest lead in the game - 56:37.
At that moment, Anwil was thought to be an easy winner of the game, however, nothing further from the truth. The closer it was to the end of the battle, the more tired the players of the host team became. It means not only did they play against the opponents, but only against fatigue, as the headcoach Milija Bogicevic was able to rotate only seven players due to a series of previous injuries.
Just two minutes to go, the guests cut Anwil's lead to only two, 66:68, thanks to a couple of shots of Lukasz Seweryn and A.J. Walton. Nevertheless, Anwil turned out to be more focused in the final minutes as Danilo Mijatovic made a long distance shot and Michal Sokolowski closed the game with an easy lay-up.
Above-mentioned Dulkys scored 19 points for Anwil and became a game best scorer. Lithuanian player was succesful in replacing injured Dusan Katnic on a point guard spot. Sokolowski added 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Mijatovic finished with a double-double consisted of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Taking into consideration the lead Anwil had in the middle of the game, the hosts should have won the game easier and with a bigger margin. However, the group that participated in the game needed to vie with exhaustion - for a couple of guys (Dulkys, Sokolowski or Mateusz Kostrzewski) it was the second game within three days that they needed to play more than three quarters. Hopefully, the rotation is going to be extended on Monday when Anwil will be playing against Stelmet Zielona Gora as Katnic is supposed to be back on the floor then.
