The first serious lead (12:4 at the very beginning) showed that Anwil Wloclawek didn’t frighten the hosts and especially their playmaker, Josh Miller. American small guy was trying to maximise the pace of the game and that tactics brought an effect in the first quarter because Siarka Jezioro Tarnobrzeg were leading 23:18.
However, Anwil snapped out of that indolence and thanks to Krzysztof Szubarga and Dardan Berisha, who gave 12 points altogether, cut the whole Siarka’s lead – just a minute to the break it was 38:37 for the guests. Nevertheless, at first Marek Piechowicz made a triple, while J.T. Tiller added a jumper and set the result after two quarters to 44:41.
The Anwil fans, who followed the team for 350 kilometers, believed that their favourites will be trying to take control of the game after the changeover. However, nothing further from the truth. Josh Miller still continued to play at his best while Nicchaeus Doaks scored from low-post, Siarka took a 62:47 lead in the middle of the third quarter!
Having been irritated, Anwil changed the defense and started to cut the lead arduously. Berisha was very active in that moment, while big points were given by Corsley Edwards and John Allen. The fourth quarter Anwil began with an Edwards’ lay-up and the quests were winning 74:73! After a triple of Lukasz Majewski, Anwil even had an advantage of four (84:80) and when Seid Hajric made a jumper, it was 91:88.
That moment turned out to be very controversial. Anwil had a ball and when the clock was running out, Hajric passed the ball to Edwards who attempted a shot. He missed but Polish forward rebounded and gave two points. The referees firstly recognized two points but next withdrew a decision because Edwards attempted a shot when the action was over. That situation wouldn’t have been controversial if the referees hadn’t made the final decision after the video analysis which is prohibited.
Nevertheless, Anwil was very close to win that game after Allen scored 1 of 2 of his free throws and the guests had a margin of three (93:90) just three seconds to go. The headcoach Dariusz Szczubial asked for a timeout and he drew a special strategy for the last action which turned out to be crucial for the whole game – Przemyslaw Karnowski got passed and he made a triple which gave the overtime. In that additional time Anwil weren’t able to fight with the opponent which had a psychological advantage and finally lost 104:109.
