Anwil Wloclawek beat AZS in an away game at Koszalin in the 24th round of Tauron Basket Liga. The guests nailed the victory in overtime having a great piece of luck because the crucial shots were attempted by the hosts.
Corsley Edwards noted his fifth double-double in the season while Bartlomiej Woloszyn took an opportunity of playing in the starting five and Anwil Wloclawek turned out to be better than a host team AZS Koszalin. American center had 15 points and 12 rebounds including five offensive ones and Polish forward made 5-for-6 three pointers. Krzysztof Szubarga gave a great backup as he finished the game with 14 points and seven assists and Anwil won 80:79.
On Sunday the guests won the rebounds 46-37 and it turned out to be a key factor. It is worth adding that it was the first case that the team of Emir Mutapcic wins that classification including nine last games.
Anwil was leading 44:34 in the middle of the second quarter as they were able to make a run of 17-0. Unfortunately that good streak was stopped by the hosts even before the break and the battle point-by-point started. Just 10 seconds to go with a 75:75 draw, LaMont McIntosh had a chance to become a game hero but his shots was rejected by Edwards and the referees sent the game to overtime.
Both teams struggled in the additional time but it was Anwil who found their rhythm quicker. When Edwards made 1-for-2 of his free-throws the guests took a one-point lead, 80:79 just 17 seconds to go. However, Lawrence Kinnard’s unsportmanlike foul let AZS keep their hope and sent Callistus Eziukwu to the line. American center missed both, but the ball was still in the hosts’ hands 3,5 second before the clock-off. That meant firstly Marcin Dutkiewicz and secondly Grzegorz Surmacz were trying to the tip the balance but they both missed.
It is worth adding Anwil played without their captain, Lukasz Majewski, while AZS didn’t have George Reese in the roster. Polish player got his eyebrow cut and American still has problems with his back.
Anwil won a very important game which let them maintain a good position on the top.
