Winsome Frazier scored eight points easily at the beginning of the game and AZS Koszalin was winning by three, 14:11. Anwil players had some problems with communication in defense and that was used especially by Igor Milicic who dished six assists, although the hosts were defeating after ten minutes 22:23.
The situation changed on the floor because Emir Mutapcic’s guys started to defend better and they took control of the game in offense as well. George Reese had no chances with Paul Miller who was very active in low-post and scored 12 points in the first half while reserve players like Chris Thomas, Dardan Berisha and Eric Hicks added some key points and Anwil were leading 48:36.
When Lukasz Majewski made a jumper after the break and the result was 57:42 for guests, it seemed that Anwil won’t let the chance out of their hands. But AZS didn’t want to give up and the head coach Mariusz Karol decided to use all his experienced players like Reese, Frazier, Milicic and Slavisa Bogavac. The first American turned out to be the guy who started the process of decreasing Anwil’s margin while Serbian forward added some big shots and the hosts cut the lead to a 57:67 result after the third quarter and 68:75 in the middle of the fourth one.
Even Bogavac was able to come up AZS to only five, 73:78, but then the hero of the game came out of the shadow. D.J. Thompson, ex-Koszalin player, made the most important three-pointer in this match and next added some rebounds and free throws while Anwil finally won 85:78 and broke the series of the last five defeats. It is worth adding that Saturday’s victory was also the first league won of Emir Mutapcic.
